About me, Candice Slobin. With much thanks and gratitude to my one and only art teacher, Susan Manders, with an abundance of fear, ten years ago, I leaped into being a student of oil painting. It is only recently that I think of myself as an artist. My work is mostly figurative and contemporary, influenced by my own intimate experiences and the people who have been in and around my life. My use of color and the palette of any piece are often related to the music I am listening to while painting. I am never married to one school or theory of art, although there are great artists that take my breathe away; De Kooning, Basquiat, Schiele, Xenia Hausner and others. What comes to me organically on the canvas seems to create paintings that are imperfect in detail, loose, non-intellectual studies that are characteristically uncertain and amusing.
